ARTIST: Teddy Grey

ALBUM: The Great Failed Romances of the Twentieth Century

RELEASE DATE: October 22, 2021

With the dawn of the twentieth century came celebrity-driven culture, when suddenly the stars of the stage and screen became as famous and beloved as the characters they were portraying. Their larger-than-life personalities and antics made them known to the world, but when two of these stars would link up for a romantic pairing, that’s inevitably when chaos would ensue. And we loved every minute of it.

That’s the focus of Teddy Grey’s upcoming double album “The Great Failed Romances of the Twentieth Century,” and it’s his most ambitious and accomplished work yet. Produced by Grey and his long-time collaborator Michael Lepore, the two teamed up with producer Charles Newman (The Magnetic Fields, The Bones of J.R Jones) to finish of the album remotely with Newman in LA and Grey and Lepore in NYC adding final touches and mixing through the first half of 2021.

Featuring 30 songs recorded in various genres, and featuring numerous guest vocalists and instrumentalists, the album takes a satirical yet heartfelt look at some of the most widely-discussed couples of years past. From the iconic (Katharine Hepburn & Spencer Tracy) to the moronic (Vanilla Ice & Madonna), from the rumored (James Dean & Marlon Brando) to the all-too-real (Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton), the album treats you to the wildest and most entertaining history lesson of your life.

Some songs are an overview of the relationship as a whole, some focus on a specific moment between the duo, some are duets, some are sung from one half of the couple directed at the other. There are cheerful love songs, crushing break-up songs, cruelly funny songs, it runs the gamut. But more than being just the indie rock equivalent of TMZ, THE GREAT FAILED ROMANCES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY provides, through its stories, insight into why so many celebrity unions crumble, and why we can’t get enough of hearing about them. It asks, if even those with everything can’t secure their happiness, what hope is there for the rest of us? Or were these unions so spectacularly messy because so many of them took place in the public eye, instead of behind closed doors?

Either way, you’ll be treated to 85 minutes of maddeningly catchy melodies and endlessly fascinating stories. Shimmering guitar pop, piano ballads, arena rock, we’ve got it all - even a 32 second hoedown detailing the 32 day marriage of Ernest Borgnine and Ethel Merman!

ABOUT:

Teddy Grey is a New York-based artist who has been developing a following online over the past few years by releasing offbeat, homemade projects such as the feature-length Youtube cult hit "Garfeld: The Musical (A Garfield Parody)" in 2019, and his debut mixtape "Rock N Roll McDonalds" in 2020. Often writing with a satirical and theatrical bent, Teddy's work occupies a niche that seems to be expanding with each coming project due to its homespun charm and ability to wring poignancy out of ridiculous topics.

The diverse double album is a project that stems from a lifelong fascination with iconic couples, messy breakups, and the pop culture of years past. With over a decade spent in the theater and a feverish obsession with studying the pop music of bygone eras, Teddy’s unique influences and experiences have made him specially equipped to bring a project such as this one to life. "The Great Failed Romances of the Twentieth Century" is the first work that showcases the full breadth of his influences and abilities, with 30 memorable songs to sing and stories to tell.
